Description
An interesting Victorian sporting award medal associated with the National Physical Recreation Society (N.P.R.S.), dated 1887. The medal is formed as a Maltese-style cross with an applied laurel wreath and central shield engraved "N.P.R.S. Shield".
The upper arm is engraved "W. Jones", almost certainly identifying the recipient, whilst the lower arm is engraved 1887. The design combines classical sporting motifs, including the laurel wreath symbolising achievement and victory.
Founded during the Victorian era, the National Physical Recreation Society promoted organised sport, exercise, and physical recreation throughout Britain. The medal retains its suspension loop and displays well, making it an appealing piece for collectors of sporting memorabilia, medals, and Victorian social history.
