Description

A desirable antique Dorcas sterling silver thimble by the celebrated Halifax silversmith Charles Horner. This example features the classic Dorcas steel-lined construction and is clearly marked DORCAS together with the maker's initials CH and size 8.

The thimble is decorated with an attractive engine-turned style geometric pattern comprising rows of raised pyramidal squares, with a contrasting honeycomb-style top section. The decoration remains crisp and well-defined, giving the piece excellent display appeal.

Charles Horner's patented Dorcas thimbles are among the most sought-after antique thimbles, valued for both their durability and collectability.

Maker History

Charles Horner (1837–1896) was one of Britain's most important manufacturers of silver thimbles and small silverware. Based in Halifax, Yorkshire, he patented the famous Dorcas thimble in 1884. The innovative design incorporated a steel lining beneath the sterling silver exterior, preventing wear-through and greatly extending the life of the thimble. Dorcas thimbles remain highly collectable today and are considered among the finest antique thimbles produced in Britain.
