Antique Silver Fusee Pocket Watch – Adam Burdess Coventry – London 1865
Description:
A fine mid-19th century antique silver-cased fusee pocket watch, dating to 1865, and fitted with a signed movement by Adam Burdess of Coventry. The watch is currently running, and presents in attractive, honest, un-restored condition, retaining excellent period character throughout.
The white enamel dial features black Roman numerals with a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock. As expected with a watch of this age, there are some minor age-related marks, including a small chip to the dial around the 12 o’clockposition, clearly shown in the photographs.
Maker & History:
The movement is signed Adam Burdess, Coventry, a documented English watchmaker active during the mid-19th century. The surname is sometimes misread as “Burdels” due to the flowing engraved script, but Burdess is the accepted and recorded attribution.
The silver case is hallmarked London, 1865, with the maker’s mark SJ / EH for Samuel Jackson & Edward Hickman, known London case makers of the period.
