Antique Silver Badge – 'De Adelaar' – Vice Secretaris – c.1888

Description

An unusual late 19th-century silver society or association officer's badge engraved "De Adelaar" ("The Eagle" in Dutch) and dated 1888. The reverse is engraved "Vice Secretaris", identifying the original owner as the Vice Secretary of the organisation.

The badge is formed as a shield-shaped plaque surmounted by a pierced double-headed eagle emblem. The front features attractive hand-engraved decoration with the organisation name prominently displayed across a diagonal banner.

The silver is stamped with what we beleive to be Dutch hallmarks. While the exact organisation remains unidentified, the Dutch-language inscriptions suggest a Dutch-speaking society, club, guild, or association active during the late 19th century.

An intriguing piece of social history and a highly decorative collector's item.
