This charming antique pocket watch, made by T & E Rhodes of Kendal, is a beautiful piece of horological history, dating back to 1864. The silver case is hallmarked London 1864, with the maker's mark "SF" for Samuel Freeman. Both the movement and case are marked with the matching serial number "25052," ensuring the originality of this timepiece.

Key Features:

  • Movement: The key-wound movement is marked "T & E Rhodes, Kendal," it winds and ticks along beautifully. While the watch is currently running, the accuracy has not been tested. The last service date is unknown, so a service is recommended if you intend to use it regularly.

  • Historical Side Note: In the 1870s, T & E Rhodes, the jewelers in Highgate, were entrusted with the official timekeeping in Kendal. They were responsible for firing a timing gun in the Serpentine Woods via telegraph wire at 1 pm each day, a practice that continued until the 1940s.

  • Case: The silver case is in good condition, with the original hallmark "London 1864 SF" and the matching serial number "25052." Please note that the button to release the rear lid is no longer functional, though the hinges remain in good order.

  • Dial: The watch face shows some wear, with damage around the seconds dial, adding to the character of this antique piece.

  • Crystal: The crystal is in good condition with minor surface imperfections consistent with age.

  • Dimensions:

    • Case diameter: approximately 53mm
    • Face diameter: approximately 47mm
    • Overall thickness: approximately 21mm
